To call another mobile phone subscriber in Turkey, dial 0 (zero), the three-digit network (area) code (which always begins with 5), and then the seven-digit number; 0 5xx xxx xxxx.

To call a landline phone (non-mobile) within Turkey, dial 0 (zero), the three-digit area code, and then the seven-digit number; 0xxx xxx xxxx.

To call an international number, dial the international prefix '+' (plus), or 00 (zero-zero), then the country code, the area/network code, and then the phone number.

To Send an SMS Message

To send an SMS message to a domestic GSM subscriber within Turkey, after writing your message, dial 0 xxx xxx xxxx.

To send SMS to an international GSM number, after writing your message, dial the international prefix '+' (plus), or 00 (zero-zero), the country code, the area/network code, and then the mobile number.

Many of the services available in your home country may be available while you're roaming in Turkey.

All three Turkish mobile phone companies have websites with English-language sections, but...

— The English-language section of the Turkcell website will tell you about awards it has won, and will help you invest in the company, but offers you little help actually using your phone. If you can't read Turkish, you're pretty much out of luck.

— The English-language section of the Vodaphone website provides useful info for using your phone in Turkey

— The English-language section of the Avea website may be the most useful of the three, but remember that Avea operates on the 1800Mhz band, so your phone must have this capability.

The variety and number of mobile phone pricing plans and services from these companies demands an intuitive, well-designed website interface with full translations, but none of these websites has this.

They have lots of moving, flashing colored graphics, but no way to help you choose a pricing plan easily (sigh...)

Remember to protect yourself against mobile phone theft.
