Old New Constantinople The southern end of Istiklal Caddesi at Tünel Meydani (Tunnel Square) is where you board the Tünel, Beyoglu's little two-station underground train, for the ride downhill to Galata (Karaköy). Note the tram tracks. A restored early 20th-century tram runs between Tünel Meydani and Taksim Square. If you don't take the tram, you can walk downhill on Galipdede Caddesi, passing a whirling dervish hall, the Galata Tower, and the Ashkenazi Synagogue. |
