More Leather than Fur
Perhaps because fur is so valuable,
this section of Istanbul's Grand
Bazaar was set off by itself
and could be closed off
tight from the rest
of the bazaar. The shops—and
shoppers—look more upscale.
When you go shopping here, you'll
find some fur,
but more leather apparel:
coats, jackets, vests, skirts,
dresses, accessories.
The shops
are patronized mostly by Istanbul people,
but also by visitors, who travel
to Turkey for the reasonable
prices.
Remember: on the Muslim holy-day
of Kurban
Bayramı ("Sacrifice
Holiday") over a million
sheep are offered to God in imitation
of Abraham's sacrifice of a sheep
instead of his son Isaac.
You can make an awful
lot of leather apparel out
of a million sheepskins... |
