The museum in Side (SEE-deh),
between Antalya and Alanya on
Turkey's
Mediterranean
coast, is in the restored Roman baths near the
15,000-seat
great theater. Artifacts from the extensive ruins
of this large, very old
city are exhibited here.
Few are as graceful as these three marble
torsos all by themselves in a room where
they catch the warm Mediterranean sun on
a summer afternoon,...as--who knows?—their
models might have done in real life two thousand
years ago.
Antony met Cleopatra at the Temples of Apollo
and Athena in Side for
a romantic rendezvous right on the shore. Did they look upon these
graceful sculpted shapes then, as we do now?
