Eskişehir is an important
industrial and transport center
in western
Turkey, 330 km (205 miles) southeast
of Istanbul and
234 km (145 miles) west of Ankara (map).
There has been a city here for about 3000 years,
and indeed Eskişehir (ess-KEE-sheh-heer,
alt. 730 meters/2400 feet, pop. 800,000) means "Old
City" in Turkish.
In Roman times, this was Dorylaeum,
among the most beautiful cities in
Roman Asia Minor.
Late in the Ottoman period, Eskişehir was chosen
as a major construction and marshalling point for
the building of the Baghdad Railway.
In Republican times
its railroad importance increased, and today all
trains between Istanbul
and Ankara,
Istanbul
and Konya, and Izmir
and Ankara pass through
Eskişehir. YHT
High-Speed Trains shoot between
Eskişehir and Ankara numerous times daily.
Eskişehir has a good selection of hotels. More...

The Kurşunlu Mosque |
The city has several things to see
and do, including the Ottoman-style houses
of the Odunpazarı neighborhood,
the Ottoman Kurşunlu Mosque
complex (1515), the Porsuk Çayı
river, with its beautified
banks, cruise boats and gondolas;
a lively market district (Çarşı) and, outside the
city, the tomb of an 8th-century Arab general,
and ruins of ancient Phrygian
cities and temples. More...
Eskişehir is obviously prosperous.
Its prosperity comes from the railroad and its factories,
sugar refieries, factories for aircraft
engines, a big Turkish Air Force training base, and
several universities and technical colleges.
Bus and train service
to Eskişehir is frequent.
The trains on the main Istanbul-Ankara,
Istanbul-Izmir and
Istanbul-Konya runs
come through here. More...
