The Karlık Evi is
a small hotel standing on a spur above
the old Cappadocian
town of Uçhisar with
a spectacular
view of the old
Kale (‘Fortress’)
from its sprawling garden.
Externally,
the modern building may not be much
to look at but inside it’s supremely
stylish and decorated throughout with
original paintings, many of them done
by artists who have attended art camps
here.
The Karlık (KAHR-luk)
is a hotel with an alternative
touch.
The 22 spacious guest rooms are
spread out over two floors. Beds, some
of them circular,
some of them on stone platforms, come
with orthopedic mattresses and anti-allergenic
fillings.
All rooms have either Jacuzzis or steam
baths.
Candles are a conspicuous
feature, and every room has its own
music system. The furnishings mix the
old and new to pleasing effect. Color
schemes are bold and original.
A huge dining room and reception area
ensure plenty of space for guests to
get to know each other.
The annual art camp in June draws
a mixed bag of sculptors, painters
and graphic artists from all over Turkey
and the rest of the world.
