Some of the cheapest beds in Istanbul are in hostels and pensions only a few minutes' walk from the Blue Mosque, the Byzantine Hippodrome and most of the city's top sights.

Hostels may be very simple and spartan, or they may have a variety of accommodations from double-rooms-with-shower through multi-bed dorm rooms sharing common facilities to space on the roof where you can roll out your sleeping bag. Some hostels can be elaborate establishments with bars, restaurants, travel agencies and other services. Cheap doesn't necessarily mean spartan.

Pensions and guesthouses have a more family atmosphere and even more variety in accommodations. Some rooms may have their own plumbing, others may not. Because rooms vary, it's a good idea to look at several if possible before choosing yours.

The alternatives to hostels and pensions are 1- and 2-star hotels. These tend to follow standard hotel format, with expected services: 2-person rooms with private shower and toilet for a budget price. But there are exceptions.

If your needs are simple and your budget slim, here's where to stay:

Antique Hostel & Guesthouse
Cheap, clean, cheery dorm beds, yes. But also great, inexpensive single- and double guest rooms with private bath, air-con, even TV. The rooftop cafe-terrace has some of the finest Bosphorus views in the neighborhood. Excellent! More...

Hotel-Hostel Yunus Emre
Most of this fine little hotel's rooms are of three-star quality, but there are also tidy 4- and 6-bed dorm rooms with a bathroom for each room. More...

Orient Hostel
This complete backpackers's lodging at Akbiyik Caddesi 13 has double rooms, dorms, rooftop restaurant, bar with belly-dancers and nargiles, Internet access and a travel agency.

Mavi Guesthouse
Cheapest of all, the narrow blue building at Kutlugün Sokak 3 looks right out at the posh Four Seasons Hotel Istanbul.

Sinbad Hostel
A popular place for adventurous young (and youngish) travelers near all the others, right in the midst of the action in Sultanahmet.

Sultan Hostel
Just down the street at Terbiyik Sokak 3, corner of Akbiyik Caddesi, the Sultan is smaller, simpler and slightly cheaper than the Orient.
