Hotel
Ararat is
a small, moderately-priced "boutique" hotel
on Torun Sokak directly
across the street from Istanbul's Blue
Mosque.
I mean directly! Take
a look at the photo on the right, which
I shot while lying in bed in one of
the guest rooms, my head on the pillow.
I hasten to add that not all guest
rooms have the same view. Some
look toward the Sea
of Marmara. All are decorated
with original murals by
Athenian artist Nikos Papadakis (see
the photo on the right). All
rooms have private bathroom and air
conditioning.
Several of the rooms are actually
more like junior suites, with
two double beds—just right for
a small family, or two people who want
one double bed each, and more space.
When you're not in your room, head
for the rooftop terrace,
which is where you'll find breakfast every
day, a wireless high-speed
Internet connection, excellent
views of the Blue
Mosque, the Sea
of Marmara, and Ayasofya (Hagia
Sophia) and also, often, the hotel's
congenial owner, Mr Haydar
Sarigül. (that's him
in the second photo, with Ayasofa in
the background—a three-minute
walk away).
Haydar Bey is an experienced Istanbullu,
having been the originator of the popular Rumeli
Cafe restaurant in Sultanahmet
some years ago. He's also an Australian
citizen, having lived there
for some years.
The Hotel Ararat is Istanbul's
equivalent of the atmospheric little
Left Bank Paris hotel you
may have stayed in years ago, especially
good for singles and young
couples.
Note that the lobby is one flight
of steps up from the street, and many
guest rooms are up a second flight.
(There is no elevator/lift.)
If you're looking for a small, personally-run
"artsy" hotel absolutely
right next to Istanbul's prime attractions,
the Hotel Ararat is
a good place for you.
When you contact the Hotel Ararat,
be sure to mention
TTP. Here's
why.
