Valide Sultan is
the Queen Mother.
She was the second most important person
in the Ottoman
Empire after her son,
the sultan (emperor).
The Hotel Valide Sultan Konagi,
or Mansion of the Queen Mother, is
located appropriately just outside
the walls of Topkapi
Palace in Sultanahmet,
Istanbul.
It's grand (for its
size), with a true Ottoman feeling
to it: gilded furniture, rich curtains
and mouldings, lots of mirrors, and
Queen Motherly touches of decor in
many of
the rooms.
The Valide Sultan's location is excellent:
at the quiet northern end of Kutlugün
Sokak, right across the street from
the posh Four
Seasons Hotel Istanbul.
There's little traffic here, and yet
Ayasofya and the gate to Topkapi
Palace are a two-minute walk away.
The Valide Sultan's roof terrace has
unobstructed views of the Bosphorus and
the Sea
of Marmara, and of the Topkapi
Palace walls.
