Taksim
Square, at the northern
limit of Beyoglu ,
is the center of the more modern
and upscale portion of Istanbul.
Cumhuriyet
Caddesi (Republic
Avenue) runs north from Taksim
to the districts of Elmadag, Harbiye, Nisantasi and Sisli,
some of Istanbul's high-status
addresses. It's no wonder that most
of the city's 5-star luxury hotels
are here. Expect to pay
at least US$200 for a double room
in any of these places.
Walking
from Taksim Square north on Cumhuriyet
Caddesi, Here's what you'll find:
Hotel
The Marmara, a modern
high-rise right in Taksim Square,
always bustling with groups,
meetings, and social events for
the locals, with good views all
around from the upper floors.
Divan
Oteli, smaller, locally-run,
with a longstanding reputation
for superb personal service and
fine cuisine, this is a gem known
and appreciated mostly by the
Turkish upper class.
Hyatt
Regency Istanbul Hotel,
at the far end of the block from
the Divan, richly designed and
decorated, and well located,
with a swimming pool, but no
great views.
Ceylan
Inter-Continental Hotel,
asymmetrical sykscraper first
run by Sheraton; totally modern,
in a good location with excellent
views all around from the upper
floors.
Istanbul
Hilton Hotel, la
grande dame of Istanbul
luxury hotels, it had the pick
of the best locations, and is
still superb with its panoramic
views and spacious gardens and
grounds.
