Hotels in Hocapasa-Sirkeci, Istanbul

Between Sultanahmet (the center of Old Istanbul) and Sirkeci Railway Station is Hocapasa (HO-jah-pah-shah), a district with more than a dozen hotels, at least a dozen restaurants, even a Turkish bath.

In Hocapasa you may pay 20% to 35% less for a comfortable hotel room than in Sultanahmet, yet Hocapasa is only a 10- to 15-minute walk downhill from Sultanahmet, the Hippodrome, Blue Mosque, Ayasofya and even less far from Istanbul's Archeological Museums and Topkapi Palace. You can shorten this walk a bit by taking a tram.

Most Hocapasa hotels are newly-built or -restored. Many have some Ottoman-style decor, some have restaurants and/or bars, a few have views from a few rooms. All in all, this is the best-value area near Sultanahmet.

Hotel Ipek Palas ***

Been here since before I began writing about Istanbul (1968). Boasts that it's more than half a century old. Very 1940s Istanbul-ish, lots of marble, wrought iron.
