Galatasaray is Istanbul's traditional meyhane (taverna)
district, with two major centers:
Çiçek
Pasajı
Off İstiklal
Caddesi at Galatasaray
Square, this long narrow courtyard
is lined with restaurants offering
good food at rather high prices in
a convivial atmosphere. More...
Nevizade
Sokak
Near the Çiçek
Pasajı, this street is chock full
of meyhanes (Turkish
tavernas) serving excellent food and
copious booze at outdoor tables in
a bright, active, noisy atmosphere. More...
Wine Bars
Besides the Çiçek
Pasajı and Nevizade
Sokak, across from the British
Consulate-General are several wine
bars, successors to traditional
Ottoman Greek workingmen's bars where
the wine and brandy were home-made
and tapped right from the barrel.
Today these places are very much upscale,
for Istanbul's
rising Yuppie class.
Pano
Şarap Evi, Hamal Başı
Caddesi 12/B, dating from 1898,
is actually a full restaurant with
an eclectic international menu; Sarabi, İstiklal
Caddesi 80/B, offers a choice
of 100 Turkish vintages in its
underground tasting room; Hazzo
Pulo, Meşrutiyet Caddesi
75, next to the
Meşrutiyet entrance to Hazzopulo
Pasajı, is also a full restaurant
as well as a wine bar with dozens
of Turkish vintages.
