A quiet neighborhood plaza near the
Yusufpaşa Konağı
Hotel, a gentle summer
evening, white tablecloths, plates
of meze and fish, glasses of wine,
cheery conversation: that's the scene
at Balıkçı Sabahattin ("Sabahattin
the Fisherman").
The quiet neighborhood, Cankurtaran,
is just down the hill from Sultanahmet in
Old Istanbul (map).
I've had mixed reports from travelers,
and mixed experiences myself. The restaurant
is very popular with both local people
and travelers, and frequently recommended,
but in my experience service can be
somewhat uneven, and prices—especially
for wines—can be surprisingly high.
The fish is usually good, sometimes
excellent. The situation, on a summer
evening, can be memorable.
Reservations are a good idea any time
of year.
There are many other good seafood
restaurants, especially in the Kumkapı
district.
If you want fish
dirt cheap, have a fish
sandwich near
the Galata
Bridge. More...
