The least expensive way to travel between Old Istanbul and Atatürk Airport is by tram and Metro, but here's an alternative:

You can travel by suburban train (banliyö treni) and taxi between Istanbul's Atatürk Airport and Sirkeci Station (with a stop near Sultanahmet) in about an hour for under YTL10 (map).

Suburban trains run betweenSirkeci Stationand Halkali, a western suburb, stopping at Yesilyurt near Atatürk Airport, every 15 or 20 minutes throughout the day. The train ride between Sirkeci and Yesilyurt takes about 30 minutes; the taxi ride between Yesilyurt and Atatürk Airport about 10 minutes.

At morning and evening rush hours the trains may be very crowded, so you may want to go by tram and Metro, or taxi, at those times (although those will be crowded too.)

FROM ATATÜRK AIRPORT TO SIRKECI & SULTANAHMET
Be sure to have at least YTL15 in Turkish liras to pay for the taxi and train. You can get it at any ATM or currency exchange office in the airport.

Tell the taxi driver to take you to Yesilyurt Tren Istasyonu (YEH-sheel-yoort TREHN ee-stass-yoh-noo), about a 10-minute ride. You must climb some stairs with your luggage to reach the train platform, but it's not too bad.

Buy a token for the turnstile (or use your Akbil) and board the train when it comes. If you're going to a hotel in Sultanahmet, you may want to get out of the train at the Cankurtaran (JAHN-koor-tah-rahn) station, the one just before Sirkeci, and walk uphill to your hotel.

If you stay on the train to its final stop at Sirkeci, you can take the Zeytinburnu-Kabatas Tram uphill two stops to Sultanahmet, or farther west along Divan Yolu to Çemberlitas or the Grand Bazaar and beyond.

FROM SULTANAHMET & SIRKECI TO ATATÜRK AIRPORT
Suburban trains start from Sirkeci, so if you go to the station you have a better chance of finding an empty seat, especially at evening rush hour; or you can board the train at Cankurtaran (see below).

Note that there are few signs marking the stations along the route, and no station stop announcements! If you sit on the left side of the train facing forward, you'll have the best chance to see the station signs as you go.

You can take the Zeytinburnu-Kabatas Tram downhill from Sultanahmet to two stops to Sirkeci Station, just before Eminönü, the end of the line. Enter the station, walk toward the right and look for the Banliyö sign. Buy a token, put it in the turnstile and board the train.

Or you can walk from your Sultanahmet hotel downhill to the Cankurtaran station and board the train there. You'll have to climb some steps to reach the train platform, but it's not too bad. Buy a token (or use your Akbil), pass through the turnstile, and board the train when it comes, sitting (or standing) on the left side of the train, facing forward, so you can see the station signs as you go.

Get out at Yesilyurt, the station after Bakirköy, go down the steps, turn left, then left up some more steps to the street, then left to the taxi rank. Say havalimani (HAH-vah-lee-mah-nuh) to the driver. The fare should be YTL8 or less.

Say Iç Hatlar (EECH haht-lahr) for the domestic departures terminal, or Dis Hatlar (DUSH haht-lahr) for the international departures terminal.

An alternative way to/from the airport is by tram and Metro, which costs a bit less and may take a few more minutes.

Sirkeci Station, West Door, Istanbul, Turkey

This is the west door to Sirkeci Station. So why does it say "Istanbul Station"? (Istanbul has two major stations. The other is Haydarpasa.)
