Istanbul's
three-star
Hotel Ilkay, between
Sirkeci
station and Sultanahmet,
is a good choice in terms of
location, facilities and price.
Location: It's on
Hüdavendigâr Caddesi,
the continuation of Alemdar Caddesi
that connects Sultanahmet with Sirkeci and Eminönü (map).
This means you have easy access to
the Zeytinburnu-Kabatas
tram, Sirkeci
station,
the Eminönü
ferry docks, the Egyptian
(Spice) Bazaar and Galata
Bridge, and
yet Sultanahmet is only a 10-minute
walk away. And if you don't want to
walk, you can ride the tram.
Facilities: the 60
guest rooms at the Hotel
Ilkay all have individual
heating and air-conditioning units,
so you can control your room temperature
as you like. Good beds, private bathrooms,
satellite television sets, hair dryers—the
rooms are comfortable, and reached
by an elevator/lift.
There's 24-hour room service, free
safe deposit boxes for your valuables,
non-smoking rooms, and free Wifi Internet
connection in the public areas.
The Hotel Ilkay has
a good restaurant
and bar. In addition, the
Ilkay is near many good restaurants
that are, in general, lower
in price than
those in the tourist epicenter of Sultanahmet.
When I'm staying in Istanbul I often
escape the high prices on Divan
Yolu and dine at the restaurants
near the Hocapasa mosque, just a three-minute
stroll from the Hotel Ilkay.
Price: room rates
are lower in general for Sirkeci district
hotels because they are not (yet) as
well known as hotels in Cankurtaran or
along Divan
Yolu. Of course, you
