The Hotel
Sarniç on Küçük
Ayasofya Caddesi is named for the
Byzantine cistern (sarniç,
sahr-NUTCH) beneath
the hotel and neighboring buildings,
probably left from Byzantium's Great
Palace.
Known for years as the place where
Ms Eveline Zoutendijk held her famous
Turkish cooking classes, the hotel
is no longer run by Ms Zoutendijk,
who has moved her classes to a new
location.
The hotel itself is a modern building
with turn-of-the-century decor:
16 spacious guest rooms, heavy bedspreads,
brass key-card door locks, color cable
TVs, minibars, and solid bathroom appointments.
There's free Wifi Internet throughout
the hotel and, on the top floor (stairs
only, no elevatorlift), a computer
for guests' use for email and browsing
with fast ADSL Internet connection.
The rooftop restaurant has
a nice open-air terrace as well as
the main dining room, and there's a
fine view of the Blue
Mosque as well
as of the Sea
of Marmara.
The location is convenient—a five-minute
walk from the Blue
Mosque on the way to "Little
Aya Sofya" (the Byzantine Church
of Saints Sergius and Bacchus) in
a neighborhood which includes other
well-regarded hotels and restaurants.
