The Hotel Empress Zoe is among the most congenial hotels in Istanbul for any traveler, and a particularly great choice for women.

Owned and operated by American expatriot Ann Nevans and her sister Cristina Nevans, the Hotel Empress Zoe in Sultanahmet has a wonderful assortment of rooms and suites in several buildings.

Character abounds: the lobby is in a semi-sunken Byzantine cistern, the decor is by Athenian designer Nikos Papadakis, the rooftop terraces offers good Bosphorus views.

There's even a delightful sunny, private "secret garden" at the back with tinkling fountains, luxuriant verdure, and tables for breakfast, tea or wine. Fast wireless (Wifi) Internet connection is available in the lounge and the garden.

Empress Zoe
Guest rooms in the original hotel building, Empress Zoe, have been enlarged and modernized over the years, and now provide very comfortable accommodations (doubles and triples, witha few small singles). The reception and lounge are here, as well as access to the garden.

Chez Zoe
A traditional Turkish-style townhouse, Chez Zoe has four suites capable of accommodating three or four guests each (or a family of five). Each suite has a delightful hamam-style bathroom. Chez Zoe has its own private street entrance (as well as an entrance from the garden), and a private roof terrace for the use of Chez Zoe guests exclusively, with fine views of Aya Sofya and the Bosphorus.

Villa Zoe
Adjoining Empress Zoe, Villa Zoe is an Ottoman-style house with two suites, each of which can accommodate a couple or couple with a child.

The ground floor suite has a sitting room with an antique Cappadocian fireplace (not for use, unfortunately), a sink and cupboards, bedroom, little courtyard, Turkish hamam-style bathroom, and a private entrance.

The upper-floor suite has its own open-air terrace with views of the garden, an ancient ruined hamam, and a partial view of the Sea of Marmara, and a west-facing bedroom from which, with your head on your pillow, you can gaze right at Ayasofya through the window. The decorative bathroom has Byzantine arches and a marble shower.

Maison Zoe
This old Turkish-style house in the garden has three accommodations: a room for two or three, a honeymoon double room with a hamam-style bathroom, and a duplex suite with two bedrooms, a living room with access to two terraces, one bathroom, and a separate sink and cabinets. The suite is great for two couples who can share a bath, or a family of three, four, five or six. All Maison Zoe accommodations share the private rooftop terrace with fine views of Ayasofya, Sultanahmet, the city and the Sea of Marmara.

With Ann or Cristina in attendance, the various houses of the Hotel Empress Zoe have a wonderful international ambience, with guests from Europe, Asia, North America, Australia and New Zealand.

The neighborhood is excellent, with a dozen restaurants within walking distance, other hotels, and a variety of shops.

The prestigious Four Seasons Hotel Istanbul is right around the corner, as are the Blue Mosque, Ayasofya, the Byzantine Hippodrome, and Topkapi Palace.

Note: you get a 10% discount for payment in cash.
