If you're looking for home-like flats
to let/apartments in Istanbul for three
nights (minimum) or longer, check out
the Bereket and Glorya.
Except for the Galata
Tower itself, the Galata area
is not a tourist center, which, to
my mind, is an advantage: no carpet
salesmen! But a short walk downhill
brings you to the Galata
Bridge and across it the Zeytinburnu-Kabatas
tram to Sultanahmet, Divan
Yolu and the Grand
Bazaar and beyond. And a short
walk uphill brings you to the Galata
Mevlevihanesi (Whirling
Dervish Hall), Tünel
Square and the restored
tram through Beyoglu to Taksim
Square.
In effect, the location is conveniently
between the major tourist centers, and
in the "real" Istanbul.
Bereket
Apartments, Galata
The Bereket Apartments, in a newly-restored
1885 building just around the corner from the Galata
Tower, are 100-square-meters (1076 square feet) flats
with three-meter (10-foot-) high ceilings. Each of
the four apartments has two bedrooms, a living room,
spacious modern eat-in kitchen with dishwasher, hardwood
floors, modern bathroom, separate lavatory, and clothes
washer. They're nicely decorated and furnished with
a blend of new and antique pieces to provide a comfortable,
hip ambience. Apartments 3 and 4 have views of Old
Istanbul across the Golden
Horn.
Glorya
Apartments, Galata
The Glorya is a larger,
grander building dating from 1932.
On the ground floor, the Glorya
Garden Studio is perfect
for a couple with or without a child.
A well-equipped kitchenette, dining
area, work desk with phone, sitting
area and bedroom alcove enjoy access
to the private open-air patio.
On the sixth floor, the Deluxe
View Apartment is large
(90 square meters/969 square feet),
with even larger views, the advantage
of height and the bonus of a small
balcony with table and chairs. Though
a one-bedroom, it can sleep six using
the sofa-beds in the living room
and study. Dining room, sitting room,
kitchen with dishwasher, bathroom,
separate lavatory, air-conditioning,
washer/dryer--all the conveniences
are here.
The Penthouse Terrace Apartment is
my favorite, perhaps because it reminds
me of my favorite former apartment
in Istanbul: a healthy climb up the
stairs, and smaller than the apartments
on the floors below, but plenty of
room for one or two people, and the
capability of sleeping three or four
using the sofa bed in the living room.
Best of all, it has gorgeous
panoramic views over Old Istanbul,
the Golden
Horn, the Sea
of Marmara and the city:
...and
from the rooftop terrace the view continues
all the way up the Golden
Horn:

The Duplex View apartment,
the most recently renovated, is a 3-bedroom,
2-1/2-bath luxury apartment that
accommodates up to six people on two
levels, with dramatic city
views.
The Brot Apartment is yet another
choice in this district.
