Kadirga.

The pleasant, efficient, modern Sultanahmet
Suites Gold apartments
are only 6 to 8 minutes' walk from
Sultanahmet
Square and all of Istanbul's
major sights, but in a real Turkish neighborhood
(map).
Little kids sit on the curb enjoying
ice cream cones, gentle old men sit
in the sun and chat outside the mosque,
high school students, male and female,
bustle along the street to classes
ogling one another, greengrocers
arrange their produce in artful pyramids,
coffeehouse
regulars read the newspapers and
chat.
Shady Kadirga Park,
with benches, fountains and a playground
for kids,
is three minutes' walk away. Right
across the street are a few old tree-shaded saints'
tombs—quiet neighbors!
The four apartments, which I re-inspected
in September 2008, are in a completely
renovated five-storey building
with modern systems and security, wireless
Internet, cable TV, double-glazed windows,
central heat and room-by-room air conditioning,
modern
bathrooms
with
glass shower
stalls and instant-hot-water flash
heaters, and complete kitchenettes with
four-burner gas cooktops, mini-fridge,
electric kettle, toaster and microwave
oven, cutlery, utensils, glasses, cups
and plates.
The new Café Sfendon on
the ground floor is chic, cool and
ready to serve good coffee, tea, drinks
and light meals. If you don't want
to prepare breakfast in
your suite, come to the cafe for menemen (baked
eggs and tomatoes), sigara
böregi (fried
pastry rolls with white cheese), fresh
bread and homemade fruit preserves.
A
small exercise
room has several useful
exercise machines, and the adjoining kids'
playroom is
where toddlers and pre-schoolers can
enjoy themselves.
The neighborhood, called Kadirga,
has a half dozen small restaurants and pastry
shops, as many grocery
shops and greengrocers',
a taxi rank—in
short, everything you need to live
as a local for a few
days in Istanbul.
There is some street noise, because
this is a real neighborhood— vehicles
pass, kids laugh and play, school lets
out, the muezzin gives the call to
prayer—but
it's the normal sounds of city life,
not intense, and if you want quiet
you just shut the double-glazed windows.
It must be mentioned that it is not
a fancy or modern neighborhood but,
rather, working class. The walk to
Sultanahmet
Square is uphill, not
unusual for hilly Istanbul, but it
may be tedious if you're not used to
living in a hilly place. All hotels
in Kadirga must content with the hill!
On the ground floor is the office
and a clothes washer and dryer for
guests' use (€10 fee for as many
loads as you want).
The first floor apartment has twin
beds,
the other apartments have king-sized
beds. All have snowy duvets.
The sofa in the living-dining
room folds
out
to
become
a double bed
if necessary, and extra cots are
available as well.
The top (fourth) floor) apartment
is a cozy studio with bathroom, kitchenette
(with dishwasher), glass south-facing
wall, and a roomy terrace with
the best
views of all.
The owners,
Ms Aylin &
Mr Kivanç Onutman,
speak English and are used to hosting
foreign visitors. They'll provide transportation
from Atatürk Airport to your suite
at no additional cost. (From Sabiha
Gökçen, transfer is available
at an additional charge.)
Sultanahmet
Suites Diamond, a
restored historic building holding
four apartments, is even closer
to Sultanahmet
Square. More...
