Antalya Marina (Roman Harbor)

Last Updated on May 18, 2023

Antalya was founded two millennia ago because of its harbor (map) and it became a major Mediterranean port of Asia Minor in Roman times. The city has a fascinating and rich history.

Today the Antalya Marina (Kaleiçi Yat Limanı) is still at the heart of Antalya. Standing near the water's edge in the historic core of the city called Kaleiçi (Old Town of Antalya), you’re transported to Antalya’s ancient past. The marina is now surrounded by a wide range of restaurants and cafes and is one of the first places that come to mind to gather in the afternoon or evening to sip a cup of tea, coffee, or a drink or to share a lively conversation over a meal with friends. Locals and travelers alike enjoy the ambiance of the Old Town harbor.

Activities at Antalya Marina

The harbor area offers much more than dining and sipping drinks. Nearby, you'll find Hadrian's Gate, a historical monument dating back to Roman times. You can also visit Antalya's Clock Tower (Antalya Saat Kulesi), a testament to Ottoman architectural bravery.

For shopping enthusiasts, Marina is surrounded by shops selling local crafts, antiques, and jewelry. Remember to explore the alleys of Kaleiçi, where you can immerse yourself in this ancient city's rich history and culture.

Getting on one of the gulets that take visitors out into the Gulf of Antalya is also possible. These trips will generally include music, drinks, and other festivities. It also gives a different perspective of the gulf.

History of Antalya Marina

The Romans strengthened the city's fortifications and improved the harbor's facilities. Through Byzantine times, and the empires of the Seljuk Turks and Ottomans, daily life in Antalya centered on the harbor.

The boats in the port now are not cargo ships but private yachts and the broad-beamed gulets that take visitors out into the Gulf of Antalya on fishing trips or just for an excursion along the coast for a unique perspective.
