Reaching Akdag peak near Antalya

Postby Stopgap » Tue May 20, 2008 10:18 am

At the beginning I would like to apologize for the length of this post, but so many questions have raised.. Fortunately they are short and precise. But first some intro.

My girlfriend and I are planning a two-week stay in Oludeniz and apart from enjoying some activities we’d like to climb (or reach should I say) an Akdag summit. Since googling “Akdag” gives a lot of inconsistent results (this word states for “white mountain” in Turkish), let me assume that “Akdag” means the peak close to the small village Gombe, near the border between Antalya and Mugla provinces (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=pl&geocode=&q=gombe&sll=36.53695,29.586868&sspn=0.192544,0.32135&ie=UTF8&ll=36.554878,29.608154&spn=0.09625,0.160675&t=h&z=13).

1. Is it viable to wake up very early (in Oludeniz) and head to Gombe by car and start a hike from Gombe, reach the peak, spend some time by Yeşil Göl (Green Lake) and be back home in the evening? Is such itinerary viable in one day?

2. If not what temperatures should I expect during the night? (this guide http://www.roughguides.com/website/travel/destination/content/default.aspx?titleid=104&xid=idh475493696_0496 says that if I want to traverse the mountain range I should be prepared for an overnight stay – but it doesn’t precise the time needed just for reaching the peak and coming back to Gombe).

3. Should I expect meeting dangerous wildlife (bears, panthers, etc.)?

4. Did anyone do such a trip (Gombe -> lake -> peak -> Gombe)? How long and demanding it might be?

Thank you in advance. I’d really appreciate any advice or clues.

Interesting. The Rough Guide says the peak is a 3 hour climb above the lake, but it doesn't appear to say how long it takes to get to the lake (I guess you drive as far as you can).
Looks like the dirt track goes all the way to the lake (if there are no landslides blocking it). Possible on my motorbike, I'm thinking.

Exactly! That is why I'm asking about time. Most likely, I'll be trying to hitch-hike from Oludeniz to Gombe, so I will have to relay only on my own legs to get from Gombe to the lake and, eventually, to the peak. Having looked at google maps, I estimate this distance to be about 15 km. What do you say - is such an assumption correct?

I reckon it's about 7km or more to the lake from Gombe, which would make it at least a ten hour round trip to the peak and back. No way can you do that in a day out of Ölüdeniz. I think you'd be better off staying in one of the pensions in Gombe and getting someone to drive you up the track towards the lake, you'll still be pushed to get to the peak and back in a day.

That is a brilliant idea! I don't know why I didn't consider this option previously :) I imagine that night in Gombe, in a little snug hut, will allow experiencing something extraordinary compared to sleeping in a hotel in Oludeniz.

I hadn't realised there were so many pansiyons in Gömbe. I've found 5 on the net.
Toros, Akın, Uçarsu, Paşa and Pınar.

P.S. And the Kahramanlar Hotel. Spoilt for choice!
