The 2011 Formula 1
Grand Prix auto
race was held in Istanbul on
the weekend of
May 6
to 8, at Istanbul
Park in Tuzla/Kurtköy,
62 km (38 miles) southeast of Istanbul on
the Asian side of the
Bosphorus near Sabiha
Gökçen
Airport (map).
The winner was Sebastian Vettel.
However, Istanbul was dropped from
the official schedule for 2012. It's
not clear if or when another Formula
1 Grand Prix race will be
held in Istanbul.
When races were held, most Istanbul
hotels were fully booked months
in advance for the entire weekend.
If Grand
Prix returns to Istanbul,
you'd do well reserve
your room early!
A good
travel agent to
use is Backpackers
Travel.
If you're coming from abroad, the
best way to visit Turkey for the races
may
be by special tour.
Transport to Istanbul
Park: many
Istanbul
hotels organize private
minibuses to take their
guests from Istanbul city
center to the Istanbul
Park Otodrom for special
events, and return. This may
cost much less
than a private taxi.
Backpackers Travel has
its own fleet of comfortable mini-
and midibuses, and uses them to shuttle
race fans between their hotels and
Istanbul
Park for the race events,
with excellent service at
reasonable prices. More...
Luckily,
the flow of traffic to
Istanbul
Park is often the
opposite
of the rush hour traffic,
so the trip usually takes about one
hour each
way.
