Auto racing is a fairly new sport in Turkey, but motorsport got a big boost with the designation of Istanbul as the site of the WRC Formula 1 Grand Prix that took place on August 21, 2005.

Istanbul hosted annual Formula 1 Grand Prix races for seven years (until 2011), but was dropped from the official sechedule for the 2012 race. It's not clear when the next race will be held in Istanbul.
