For
many years, my
favorite hot-air balloon flight company
in Turkey was Kapadokya Balloons with
an office in Göreme Town.
They had excellent, experienced
pilots, first-rate equipment and
an unblemished safety record—all
of which were very important,
believe me.
In May 2009 the
company was sold. The new
owners may make some changes,
so it may be a different
company. I will report on it as I
learn about the changes.
As
for the past, on my first hot-air
balloon flight ever, the pilots, Lars and Kaili,
told me "we'll pick
apricots from the trees" as
we descend into the steep Cappadocian
valleys then ascend to vault the
volcanic ridges.
I
thought they were joking, but they
weren't.
The
pilots are
so skillful that we did indeed fly
close enough to pluck fruit from
trees, but it was spring and none
was ripe yet. Fruit or no, their
skill is nothing short of astounding. This photo
gallery has more
info.
In
the past, Kapadokya
Balloons had several different
flight durations and fares. If
you plan to fly only once in your
life, I'd recommend that you go
for the longest flight so
your time soaring silently through
the heavens doesn't seem all too
short.
One
of the nice things about these early
morning flights is that you've had
the thrill of the day (if
not of a lifetime), and then you
go have breakfast and still have
a full day of fun ahead of you.
Contact
Kapadokya Balloons for
details on schedules, reservations
and fares. (Be sure to mention
TurkeyTravelPlanner.com when
you contact them, for these
reasons.)
