You'll find several routes
for trains in Turkey (especially
some sleeping
car trains) to be particularly
useful during your trip. A few
trains to Greece, Europe, Syria and
Iran are also
useful.
Istanbul
- Ankara
Fast, comfortable and cheap, with
some high-speed
train service. The trip takes
5 to 9+ hours depending on the train,
and costs TL24
to TL80
per person, one-way. More...
Istanbul - Cappadocia
There's no convenient train service
directly between these two points,
but you can take the train (especially
sleeping-car
trains) part
of the way. More...
Istanbul - Izmir
This route is by train and ferryboat.
The 6
Eylül Ekspresi (September
6th Express) is the better
train on this route, making
the 342-km (212-mile) run between Bandırma and Izmir,
in 5-1/4 hours. It's coordinated
with the IDO fast
ferry route between Bandırma and Istanbul,
making the total journey time
under eight hours. The evening 17
Eylül Ekspresi does
not reach the ferry in time, so you must
stay overnight in Bandırma. More...
Ankara
- Izmir
Two good expresses, both at night. More...
Istanbul
- Thrace
(Edirne):
once traveled by the fabled Orient
Express connecting
Paris and
Constantinople, this European route
is now better served
by bus.
Yes, you can take the one daily train
between Istanbul and Europe,
but bus
service to Edirne and beyond
is much faster and more convenient. More...
Izmir
- Airport - Selçuk
- Aydın - Denizli (Pamukkale)
Track improvements on this line promise
faster service. A few trains are running
part way now, with more later. More...
International Trains
One train to Greece, one
train to Europe,
several to Syria and Iran are
also useful.
