Because of work on the rail line east of Istanbul, which has closed that line to all trains until 2014, the Güney Ekspresi (Southern Express) now runs only between Ankara, Diyarbakır and Kurtalan (just west of Siirt).

It's a slow train, stopping at every station along the way, hauling reserved and unreserved compartment cars, a couchette car, a sleeping car and a dining car, usually fairly old equipment—this is not the most comfortable train.

See also the Vangölü Ekspresi and Trans Asya Treni, which follow a similar route between Ankara and Malatya on different days of the week.

Please read this safety notice about sleeping car travel.
