Turkish
State Railways has
three trains connecting Turkey
with Iran:
VAN - TEBRIZ TRAIN
Once a week on Thursday a train departs
Van at 21:30 (9:30 pm) for Tebriz (Tabriz),
arriving on Friday morning at 08:30 am.
From Tebriz the train departs on Wednesday
at 22:30 (10:30 pm), and arrives in
Van on Thursday morning at 06:00 am.
A one-way ticket costs 10.80 euros.
If you want a couchette for
this overnight trip, add
3.50 euros to the fare.
TRANS
ASYA TRENİ
It takes several days
(over 66 hours) for the Trans Asia Train
to travel from
Istanbul to
Tabriz or Teheran, and includes
crossing huge Lake
Van on a ferryboat. More...
It would hardly seem
worth the trouble, especially as cheap
flights and buses are faster and not
much more expensive.
IRAN-TURKEY-SYRIA
TRAIN
Once per week a train runs between Teheran (Tahran),
Iran, through Turkey to Damascus, Syria, stopping at
Tebriz, Razi, Kapıköy, Van, Van İskelesi, Tatvan İskelesi,
Tatvan, Muş, Elazığ, Malatya, Fevzipaşa, Islahiye,
Meydanekbez (Midan Ikbis), Aleppo (Halep, Halab) and
Damascus (Dimashk, Şam).
The train departs Teheran on Monday
evening at 21:25 (9:25 pm) and arrives
in Van, Turkey, on Tuesday evening
at 19:33 (7:33 pm); in Malatya at 16:37
(4:37 pm) on Wednesday afternoon, and
on Thursday morning in Aleppo (Halep,
Halab) at 05:30 am and Damascus (Dimashk,
Şam) at 11:00 am.
From Damascus, the train departs on
Monday at 07:21 am; from Aleppo at
12:45 pm, arriving in Malatya at 02:52
on Tuesday morning, in Van at 21:39
(9:39 pm) Tuesday evening, in Tebriz
at 06:35 am on Wednesday morning, and
in Teheran at 20:20 (8:20 pm) on Wednesday
evening.
The entire trip takes about 60 hours
(2-1/2 days) and costs 33.50 euros
one-way from Teheran to Damascus, but
between Van and Tebriz the
fare is only 9.40 euros.
